DEADLY VICTORY: Final Year Student Liverpool's Fan Dies Celebrating UCL Victory Over Barcelona

A fan of Liverpool, Hebert Danso Atiko has died while jubilating after his team won Barcelona during yesterday's game.

Liverpool has lost one of their fans after he collapsed following the team’s 4 nil defeat of Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals second-leg match at Anfield on Tuesday.

Hebert Danso Atiko, a Ghanaian, was found lying on the floor unconscious following a jubilation session for the fourth goal at a pub in Eastern Ghana.

An eyewitness said Atiko was rushed to the Akwatia St. Dominics Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead after other soccer fans at the pub tried but failed to revive him.

Hebert was a final year Engineering student at Akwatia Technical School and was writing his final exams.

He was staying in a rented apartment outside the school campus.

The Principal of Akwatia Technical School, Maxwel Owusu-Afriyie told Accra based radio station Starr FM the incident is being investigated.

Afriyie said: “We will get the details and see if there was something the students did that suggest that his behavior was in excess.

“On that we can really talk to the students. We have a system in place where we talk to the students and their behavior these days”.

Hebert is believed to be a teenager. Liverpool’s win over Barcelona on Tuesday has been ranked among one of the greatest comebacks in world football.

They beat the Spanish champions despite losing the first leg 3-0.

The victory has shocked many soccer fans, as Liverpool will now be playing in the Champions League final in Madrid for the second year in a row.

2018 FIFA Best Award: Luka Modric Beats Ronaldo, Messi; Declared Winner

Luka Modric
Luka Modric
Luka Modric has been crowned the 2018 FIFA Men’s Player of the year, after defeating fellow finalists Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohammed Salah at the London’s Royal Festival Hall on Monday night.

His emergence follows his exploits with Croatia who reached the final of this year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia and with Real Madrid who retained the UEFA Champions League.

This year’s edition brings an end to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s 10-year domination of the most prestigious award. Both Ronaldo and Messi failed to show up at the awards.

‘It was an unbelievable season, the best season in my life,’ said Modric, 33. ‘I’m very proud of everything I achieved this year. It will be remembered, for sure, forever,’ said Modric after receiving his award.

Nine different categories were decided with the Goalkeeper of the Year going to Belgium goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, while Didier Deschamps won the Coach of the Year for guiding France to win the World Cup in Russia.

In doing so, Deschamps becomes the third man in history to win the World Cup both as a player and a manager, joining Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer.

Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah won the Puskas award in recognition of his strike against Everton last season in the English Premier League which saw him wriggle past three defenders to score. Interestingly Salah’s goal was adjudged the best ahead of Gareth Bale’s bicycle kick against Liverpool during the UEFA Champions League final.

Olympic Lyon manager Reynald Pedros was voted the Women’s Coach of the Year after leading the French side to a league and UEFA Women’s Champions League double last season. The women’s player award went to Brazil’s Marta who beat Lyon duo Ada Hegerberg and Dzsenifer Marozsan. Marta had previously won the-defunct FIFA World Player of the Year award five years in a row between 2006 and 2010.

The voting system is decided by national team managers, national captains, media representatives and an online vote.

Chelsea Signs Jorginho
Chelsea has completed a deal to take Napoli's Jorginho to Stamford Bridge, the club have announced.

The Italy international has penned a five-year deal with the Blues, becoming Maurizio Sarri's first signing for the club

Earlier on Saturday, the Blues confirmed that they had appointed Maurizio Sarri as their new manager for the next three years following the sacking of Antonio Conte on Friday.

Chelsea will pay £57m (€65m/$86m) for the player, with Jorginho having signed a five-year contract with the club, where he will earn £102k per week.

Jorginho played 33 times for Napoli in Serie A last season, scoring two goals and creating four more from his deep-lying position in the midfield as they finished second behind Juventus in the standings.

Speaking to the club's official website, Jorginho said: "I am absolutely ecstatic to be here at Chelsea. It is not easy to become part of such a big team so I am very, very happy.

"I am excited to play in such an intense league, for a team that gives everything to play and win."

The Italy international was an important member of Napoli's squad under Sarri and the Blues expect him to have a similar influence in London.

"We are delighted Jorginho has chosen to join Chelsea," club director Marina Granovskaia said. "He was one of the most coveted midfielders in Europe and will become an important member of the playing squad.

"He has demonstrated his quality working under Maurizio Sarri and we are convinced his signing will help bring further success to Stamford Bridge."

City were previously interested in the 26-year-old Italy international but it is Sarri's side who have won the race to sign the player.

SOCCER FRAUD: 8 Men Discovered in Iranian Female Football Team

SOCCER FRAUD: 8 Men Discovered in Iranian Female Football Team

8 Men in Iran Female Soccer Team
A TOTAL OF EIGHT able body men has been detected in Iranian soccer team

They were reportedly fielded by officials of the Iranian football organization.

Iranian soccer officials are accused of taking advantage of a sports policy which allows biological men to play on women’s teams if they believe they are women trapped in men’s bodies. This policy was announced by the International Olympic Committee and allows men to participate in Olympic events without undergoing sex change procedures.

When the policy was announced, people worried that some countries would take advantage of the policies and replace their female athletes with men and just as feared, it happened, starting with Iran.

Iranian official, Mojtabi Sharifi, admitted that the men were waiting for sex change operations.

Reacting to this, soccer authorities have ordered that all 8 men undergo gender testing to determine their levels of testosterone. This isn’t the first time the Iranian women’s team has fielded men. There were rumors that the players were men in 2011 and random gender checks in 2014 revealed some of the supposed women were men.

The problem is complicated by the Iranian culture which prohibits women from traveling unless they are given permission by their husbands or fathers. For example, Niloufar Ardalan who was recently prevented from accompanying the soccer team to a game in Malaysia because her husband would not allow her to travel.

The Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi says the national team players would fall in love with the dazzling new jerseys for the Russia 2018 World Cup.

Mikel yesterday led the younger generation of Eagles players to the unveiling of the kits by Nike in London.

The dazzling bright green and white home shirts was launched by Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi, alongside the duo of Leicester youngsters, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi.

In the 1 minute 20 seconds clip, Ndidi, Mikel, Iwobi and Iheanacho were shown giving their verdicts on the attire.

“I can see the players going crazy over this one,” Mikel said when he was shown the national side’s home shirt, in Nigeria’s famous dark green with an eye-catching neon logo.

Arsenal star Iwobi, told Nike’s official website; “ I grew up in England, but Nigeria is my homeland. When I scored that goal, the players were dancing, the fans were playing trumpets and beating drums… there was just so much passion and energy.

‘It is always an honour to wear the white and green. To compete this summer is not just our dream, it is also the dream of our fans. Together, we all represent Naija.’

The kit manufacturers Nike said they wanted to ‘tap into the attitude of the nation’ with the design and aimed to build the kit based on the identities of the players.

Nike’s Nigeria shirts are part of a collection which features Fast Fit Vapotknit technology to aide the athlete’s performance.

Despite the mixed reaction, the kit’s similarity to the iconic shirts worn by the nation’s Golden Generation in their maiden World Cup campaign in the United States in 1994 should earn it major points for nostalgia among Super Eagles supporters.

“A constant in Nigeria is an endearing love of football,” NFF President Amaju Pinnick, told Nike’s official website. “When football is on, everything stops. The new Nike kit designs honour our federation’s rich traditions. Moreover, they celebrate everything we relish about our culture.”

Iheanacho Creates First English VAR Goal Record, Scores Brace In FA Cup Match

Iheanacho Creates First English VAR Goal Record, Scores Brace In FA Cup Match

Iheanacho Scores First VAR Goal In England
Kelechi Iheanacho became the first player to score a goal awarded by a video assistant referee in English football as Leicester beat Fleetwood in an FA Cup third-round replay.

Iheanacho opened the scoring - with a routine strike - from Islam Slimani's pass.

The big talking point of the game came when the former Manchester City striker initially had a goal disallowed for offside from Riyad Mahrez's through ball.

But referee Jonathan Moss liaised with video official Mike Jones, who told him Nathan Pond's trailing foot was keeping Iheanacho onside, and the goal was awarded 67 seconds after it hit the back of the net.

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy, who missed the 0-0 draw in the initial tie, came on late on to face his former club, who are mid-table in League One.

This is the third time the video assistant referee (VAR) has been used as a trial in English football, all this month, after Brighton v Crystal Palace in the FA Cup and Chelsea v Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

The video referee was consulted in both those games, but never used to reverse a decision.

So 16 January 2018 and the first VAR decision becomes a landmark date for English football, like the first substitute to come on or the first game to be played under floodlights.

Moss had briefly spoken to the video official when Iheanacho had an earlier goal ruled out because the ball had crossed the byeline before Demarai Gray crossed it.

Nigeria striker Iheanacho, 21, has been disappointing since his £25m summer move from Manchester City.

He has not had many chances - only playing a total of 403 minutes before the game against Fleetwood, but he has rarely impressed during that time - one goal against Leeds in the EFL Cup in October aside.

But he did a good job against Fleetwood, opening the scoring with their first shot of the whole tie after converting a pass from fellow bit-part big-money forward Slimani.

He then played in Slimani with a good ball over the top, but the Algerian - who did not look impressed to be replaced after 55 minutes - volleyed wide.

Iheanacho did well for his historic goal, when he ran on to captain-for-the-day Mahrez's through ball before clipping the ball over keeper Chris Neal.

Fleetwood played their part in the first half, with Ashley Hunter forcing a diving save from Eldin Jakupovic and Conor McAleny going close on several occasions.

But in the end the quality of Iheanacho was too much for them.

Madrid Moves To Sign Chelsea's Kante
Real Madrid are interested in signing not only Eden Hazard from Chelsea, but also N’Golo Kante, according to reports in Spain.

Los Blancos are understood to be keen on making some marquee signings having been relatively quiet in recent transfer windows.

Hazard has been consistently linked with a move, with the Belgian eyed as a potential long-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo. The style and personality of the player ensures he fits the profile of a Real Madrid ‘Galactico’.

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is also keen on Hazard’s team-mate Kante.

Spanish newspaper El Confidencial report that the French coach has asked Real Madrid present Florentino Perez to make an offer for his compatriot.

Chelsea would likely resist any attempts to sign Kante, with the former Leicester midfielder having made a huge impact since moving to Stamford Bridge.

Speaking yesterday, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte said players would only be allowed to leave if replacements can be found.

‘Our squad is not big. For this reason I think it’s impossible to send on loan one player or to sell one player, if we don’t take another player.’

Raymond King, Ex-Flying Eagle Goal Keeper Dies ...How He Died Because of Electricity Outage At LUTH

Raymond King
Former Nigeria goalkeeper  Raymond King has died on Monday at the age of 52.

According to King’s former teammate, Taju Disu, the former Abiola Babes keeper died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, after he was transferred from the Ikorodu General Hospital.

King was last week reported to be down with a partial stroke and memory loss, and was initially admitted at the State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Disu said King was taken to the Ikorodu General Hospital after his health was not improving. He was later referred from there to LASUTH, Ikeja, where he gave up the ghost.

“He was transferred from the State Hospital, Abeokuta to Ikorodu General Hospital yesterday (Sunday) when his condition was not improving. The news got to the Lagos State Commissioner for Health; he directed that King should be taken to LASUTH for better treatment,” Disu told our correspondent on the telephone.

“On Monday evening, he got to LASUTH but we were initially told that there was no electricity to commence treatment. But when they eventually set up their equipment to treat him, he was already struggling to breathe and he later died.

“Raymond was part of us and we tried to get the best of treatment for him but he has left us.”

King, who hailed from Akwa Ibom State, worked with the Ogun State Sports Council.

King was a member of the 1979/80 Flying Eagles and he played for Shooting Stars of Ibadan, who he helped to a second place finish in the African Champions Cup in 1984.

He also won the 1987 FA Cup title with the defunct Abiola Babes of Abeokuta. He is said to be survived by a wife and four children.

Coutinho's Move Barcelona 'Announced'

The Spanish giants will on Wednesday host a meeting when they will hope to reach an agreement with the Reds for the Brazilian playmaker.

Coutinho agreed personal terms with Barca last summer but Liverpool’s American owners Fenway Sports Group rejected all attempts to get them to sell him..

But it now seems that Barcelona will finally get their man with the only question remaining of how the deal will be financially structured.

Liverpool want a substantial upfront payment with less of the fee dependant on add ons as Barcelona originally offered in the summer.

RUSSIA 2018: Why FIFA Actually Sanctioned Nigeria, Fined NFF
The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has stripped Nigeria of the one point they earned from their final 2018 World Cup qualifier against Algeria in Constantine on November 10, after the world football body discovered that the Super Eagles fielded an ineligible player, Shehu Abdullahi.

FIFA also fined the Nigeria Football Federation 6,000 Swiss Francs (about N2,162,923) for the development.

The Eagles had secured Russia 2018 qualification with 13 points in their first five matches, with the bottom-place Algerians eliminated, thus making the game in Constantine, which ended 1-1, a dead rubber.

But FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee stated that Anorthosis Famagusta right-back Abdullahi failed to serve a one-match suspension after being cautioned in two separate games during the qualifiers, and awarded 3-0 in favour of the Desert Foxes.

The Eagles now have 13 points while Algeria, who previously had two points, now have four points in Group B of the African qualifiers but still remain in last place behind Zambia and Cameroon, who have eight and seven points respectively.

“The match is declared to be forfeited and awarded 3-0 in favour of Algeria, with the NFF also receiving a fine of CHF6,000. This sanction bears no impact on the final result of the preliminary competition for the FIFA World Cup since Nigeria had already qualified (and Algeria eliminated) before the match took place,” FIFA said in a statement.

FIFA Friendly: Iheanacho's Goal Rescues Nigerian From Senegal Defeat

FIFA Friendly: Iheanacho's Goal Rescues Nigerian From Senegal Defeat

Kelechi Iheanacho
The Manchester City striker cancelled out Moussa Sow’s opener to ensure Gernot Rohr's men share the spoils with the Teranga Lions

An 83rd minute penalty from Kelechi Iheanacho helped Nigeria secure a 1-1 draw against Senegal in their friendly encounter at the Hive Stadium in London.

Moussa Sow had given the Teranga Lions an early second half lead but they could secure victory against the Super Eagles.

The Senegalese started the brighter of both sides in the opening 20 minutes with Idrissa Gueye exerting his influence. And their best chance of the half fell to Sow who rattled the woodwork from close range.

Halfway into the match, Super Eagles skipper for the night, Ogenyi Onazi was stretched off after collision with the Teranga Lions striker, Mame Diouf. The Trabzonspor midfielder was replaced by John Ogu.

And Ogu’s combination with Wilfred Ndidi at the heart of the midfield shifted the momentum to the Rohr’s men.

Nigeria could have gone ahead on two occasions, both opportunities falling to Iheanacho. The Manchester City man fizzled a low shot across the face of the Senegalese goal before missing a point blank effort after some good work from Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon. The first half ended goalless.

After the interval, the Senegalese regained dominance and were rewarded nine minutes into the half after Sow benefitted from poor defending to get the curtain raiser.

Rohr rang the changes with Ogenekaro Etebo and debutant, Isaac Success coming on for Iwobi and Simon respectively.

Etebo almost had an instant impact after an Eagles' breakaway saw Iheanacho release the Feirense attacker whose effort was parried.

However, the Eagles would have the final say in the match after Iheanacho was tripped in the area by goalkeeper Pape Ndiaye and the youngster made no mistake from 12-yard out to rescue Nigeria from their first loss under Rohr. The strike also marked his fifth in his last six games for the national team.

The Super Eagles will now play their second friendly encounter against Burkina Faso at the same venue on March 27.

BREAKING: Aleksander Ceferin Wins UEFA Presidency

BREAKING: Aleksander Ceferin Wins UEFA Presidency

Aleksander Ceferin Wins UEFA Presidency
UEFA on Wednesday overwhelmingly elected Slovenian lawyer Aleksander Ceferin, almost unknown three months ago, as its new president to lead the world’s most powerful football confederation into a new era after Michel Platini was forced to resign.

Ceferin, 48, beat Dutch football association chief Michael van Praag by 42 votes to 13 in the first round of voting after promising “bold” moves and an end to “intrigues” as the 55-member European body faces challenges over its flagship Champions League.

“The wind of change is blowing through European football. It is the end of one era and the start of a new one,” Ceferin said in a speech to a special congress in Athens shortly after Platini gave a farewell address and left through a side door.

Ceferin highlighted the credibility challenges facing scandal-tainted football, along with regular accusations of match-fixing and doping.

But he told a special congress in Athens: “I am not here to emphasise the negativitites that surround us. I don’t want to live in an empire of fear where every day we wake and see another negativity surfacing.

“I want to bring out all the good things UEFA has been doing and you have been doing.”

He added: “We are all tired of the current situation and look forward to a normalisation period that will be about positive things, about friendship, about football.”

Ceferin said that UEFA had to be a leader in good governance and transparency.

“We should stop with politics, plots, intrigues, lack of transparency, self-interest, it is football first. It is what I promise to all of you today, nothing more nothing less.”

On top of the absence of Platini since October, after he was suspended over a $2 million payment from FIFA, UEFA has also faced disquiet over changes to the Champions League and speculation that major clubs could break away to form their own tournament.
